Power BI Pro

Required for sharing reports with other users via Power BI Service. Licensed per user per month (approximately $10 to $14 USD/user/month as of mid-2025, billed through Microsoft). Each person who views a shared report needs a Pro licence, or the workspace needs to be on a Premium capacity.

Power BI Premium Per User (PPU)

Higher tier with additional features. Approximately $20 USD/user/month.

Power BI Embedded / Premium Capacity

For embedding Power BI reports in your own application or for very large user counts. Not relevant for most Ethiopian SMEs.

Metabase

Google Looker Studio

Free. Connects well to Google products (Google Sheets, BigQuery, Google Analytics). Less powerful than Power BI for complex data modelling. A good option if your data is primarily in Google Workspace.

Excel and Google Sheets

Familiar, flexible, but not a substitute for a proper BI tool when reports need to be shared, kept current, and used by multiple people. Most Power BI projects start because Excel-based reporting has become unsustainable.

Do you need to know coding to use Power BI?

No, for most report building. Power BI Desktop is primarily drag-and-drop. Some advanced data transformation and custom calculations use a formula language (DAX and M), but for standard business reports this is not required.

Can Power BI connect to our Odoo database?

Yes. Power BI connects to Odoo via its built-in connector or via a direct database connection to the underlying PostgreSQL database.

How long does a Power BI implementation take?

For a straightforward implementation with two or three data sources and five to ten reports: four to eight weeks. More complex implementations with many data sources, custom data models, or large data volumes take longer.

Our data is in Excel spreadsheets. Can Power BI work with that?
